The independent research experience in the SVEA lab is mostly geared toward students who have an interest in research and for whom such a research experience would be necessary (or at least helpful) as a preparation for graduate school applications. If your interests are primarily applied (i.e., "helping people", being a therapist), you may want to instead consider an internship in psychology (see psychology department web-site for more information). Historically, the students in Dr. Asberg's lab (4-5 each year, or 2-3 each semester) have the following characteristics:

1. Must be enrolled in the second research methods course that is required for psychology majors (spring semester), or have completed the research methods "sequence" (both courses) at the time of their application. An "A" in research methods is expected given the high demand and interest in participating in the independent research course.

2. Must have a GPA of 3.5* or better in psychology (*Students with a lower GPA may be considered).

3. Must have an interest in research and specifically have interests that line up with the studies conducted in the SVEA lab.

4. Must be a "team player" and be willing to collaborate with - and be supportive of - peers from a variety of backgrounds.

5. It may also be helpful if the student/applicant is interested in pursuing graduate school and if he/she can give a rationale for how the research experience will benefit this goal and the student's overall education.
